Abstract : Adoption of the method for obtaining and purifying the enterotoxin of staphylococcus No. 32/54-55 and production of homologous antitoxin has made it possible to carry out further serological tests in order to identify the enterotoxin of staphylococci in vitro from various types of material. Preliminary tests showed that strain 32/54-55 probably belongs to Type A, which is usually found in food poisoning. The method of toxin-antitoxin precipitation in gelatin was used to test 105 strains of staphylococci isolated from persons working with food. It was shown that 29 of these strains (27.6%) create enterotoxin homologous to the antitoxin of strain 32/54-55, i.e., to Type A. None of the 105 strains tested created enterotoxin of Type B. A biological experiment on kittens established that the test with in vitro precipitation in agar with A and B antienterotoxins makes it possible to identify the enterotoxin in about 70% of the cases. In 47% of the staphylococci isolated from the discharge of wounds, an enterotoxin of the same type as the toxin of the standard strain 32/54-55 was identified, and it is probable that these strains also produce Type A enterotoxin.
