Abstract : The purpose of this manuscript is to bring to the attention of the scientific programmers and computer users in the Naval Oceanographic Office the availability of, and a method of direct access to, the library of magnetic tapes of historical data (Geo-Sort file), which is the best available source of statistical oceanographic data. In addition to detailed information on how to gain access to the files, a FORTRAN program is presented that will give the (1) average sea surface sound velocity, (2) average layer depth, (3) average depth of the sound channel axis, and (4) average sound velocity at the sound channel axis. These average values are calculated for each one-degree quadrangle, for each month, from all the historical data available. The information presented in this informal report should increase the practice of extracting information from the Geo-Sort file by computer programing and discourage the less efficient practice of extracting the information manually from printed listings of the data.
