Abstract : The study of antinuclear factors during the course of diffuse, reactive, mesenchymal diseases got its start as a result of the discovery of practically constant presence of LE (lupus erythematosus) cells or in any case of an LE phenomenon during the course of disseminated lupus erythematosus as well as discovery later on that the presence of such cells depended directly on the presence of an antinuclear factor in the serum (the so-called LE factor) which is almost unanimously recognized as being of an antibody nature. The LE phenomenon involves nucleophagocytosis which takes place in vitro on the part of leukocytes, generally polynucleated, with respect to leukocyte nuclei that have been specifically altered by contact with LE factor.
