Abstract : The article discusses the importance of the FA method applied as a diagnostic tool in public-health laboratories. A brief history is given of the most outstanding events in the development of fluorescence microscopy. An explanation is given of the technic used for obtaining the diphtheria antiserum by inoculation of rabbits, of the procedure of fractionating the globulins of the antitoxin and the antiserum, and of the conjugation of the latter with fluorescein isothiocyanate. The results obtained are discussed by means of tables. The sensitivity and specificity of the method are determined. (Author)
