Abstract : Mass spectrometric studies were conducted in two areas: molybdenum oxidation by atomic oxygen and high temperature vaporization of carbon. Atomic oxygen has been shown to be a more efficient oxidizer than molecular oxygen for molybdenum surface temperatures of 900C to 1200C. Methods of heating graphite to 2800K and above have been tested and the results and problems encountered are discussed. (Author)
