Abstract : The purpose of this report is to describe an in-the-house developed Microminiature Emergency Decoder. Such a decoder was required to provide constant monitoring of emergency and communication failure replies from aircraft. The Microminiature Emergency Decoder (MMED) provides Mark X SIF equipments with an automatic monitor capability. Two models were developed. Model 1 used a shift register to perform serial-to-parallel reply code conversion; model 2 used a single-tapped delay line to perform serial-to-parallel reply code conversion and garble-code sensing. A sliding window integrator was used to detect valid replies. Unique PPI display waveforms were internally generated and mixed with Mark X video. Audible and visual alarm indicators were provided to aid controllers in identifying the specific type of emergency reply. Performance of both decoders indicated that the major cause of false alarms, resulting from synchronous reply overlap, has been eliminated. (Author)
