Abstract : According to existing knowledge, radiation-induced changes begin with absorption followed by molecular chemical change, followed by biochemical change, finally followed by anatomical change. Protection against the three latter effects is theoretically possible. This article is restricted to a discussion of the best known substances (containing an SH group), especially cysteine and cysteamine and its derivatives. Cysteamine reduces radiation effects by one-half and is five times more effective than cysteine, is simpler to produce, and is cheaper. The article describes the method of administering the treatment and the manner in which the treatment is believed to achieve protection. (Author)
