Abstract : The monovalent cations Na(+) and K(+) as well as the bivalent cations Mg(2+) and Ca(2+) are antagonistic in a certain number of chemical reactions. Thus nerve conduction and muscular contraction are physiological phenomena accompanied by chemical reactions in which the phosphate compounds described as 'with rich bonds' and the metallic cations under consideration, among others, participate. A theoretic study was made of the complexes formed by the specific molecules and the physiologically activating or inhibiting cations. (Author)
