Abstract : Cavitation inception tests have been performed on cylinders of small height-to-diameter ratio mounted on a flat plate and immersed in the plate boundary layer. The cylinder axes were perpendicular to the plate. The results are presented as plots of an incipient cavitation number versus a Reynolds number. Both the cavitation number and Reynolds number are based on the boundary layer velocity at the top of the cylinder. The ratio of the cylinder height to diameter appears as a parameter. The cavitation number is shown to be a function of the Reynolds number and the cylinder height-to-diameter ratio. It was concluded that the empirical relations obtained can be used to predict the point of incipient cavitation with sufficient accuracy for many full-scale applications. (Author)
