Abstract : The modification of a single pass schlieren system, to obtain quantitative data (density gradient) by using Moire' patterns to measure the refractive index gradient presents a new simple and inexpensive optical system to assist in analyzing boundary layers. This paper includes a study of the effects of ruling line density and misalignment upon the measurements, and a feasibility study and verification test of the two dimensional capabilities on a cylinder. Set-up and alignment, and data reduction procedures are detailed. The system has yielded highly reproduceable results; the temperature gradient on a heated vertical flat plate was measured with an average deviation of less than 2% and less than 10% was obtained for a cylinder.
