Abstract : An investigation was made of the buckling of rectangular plates with free, simply supported, or clamped edges and loaded in uniform compression or pure shear. The finite element method with a rectangular, sixteen-degree-of-freedom element was used. Results show that, for the same order of error, this element allows much coarser plate divisions than a widely used twelve-degree-of-freedom element. An order of magnitude reduction in the required order of the assembled stiffness and stability coefficient matrices results. (Author)
