Abstract : The successful hybridization of Proteus with E. coli chromosomal genes provides a potentially useful model for studying molecular genetics with a combined genetic and biophysical approach. It is now conceivable to expect that bacterial hybrids consisting of appropriate portions of chromosomal genes derived from various genera will be constructed. Such hybridized strains would be useful for the investigation of virus-bacterial host interactions, the genetics basis of bacterial virulence, evolutionary and taxonomic problems of bacterial identification as well as the development of vaccines.
