Abstract : A mutant splits off in very low numerical ratio from a single spore culture of Emersleben and a progeny obtained by additional single spore cultures and their reproductions. The mutant differs unequivocally and conspicuously from the starting form by a changed pathogenicity. The mutant form is tentatively designated 'neu' Emersleben. Identification of the mutant consists in utilization of wheat varieties resistant to Emersleben but susceptible to the mutant as selective hosts. While only a small number of wheat varieties are susceptible to Emersleben the mutant is capable of infecting the majority of German vulgare wheats especially most of the Dickkopf group. Formation of the mutant was demonstrated unequivocally in 34 cases. Mutation is invariably in the same direction; all mutants agree completely in their properties. The mutant remained constant for more than 30 generations. First observation of mutants occurred at the end of 1930 in greenhouse experiments. In the summer of 1931 natural occurrence of the mutant was demonstrated in wheat fields at Klein-Wanzleben near Magdeburg. (Author)
