Abstract : The purpose of the program was to study and evaluate the tetrahedron beam geometry for application in microwave tubes. The advantages of a magnetic quadrupole focused klystron are all a result of the strong variation of the lateral beam dimensions. The magnetic beam defocusing and the high frequency lens effects, which are the result of phase focusing, are reduced to a low value and diverted into the lateral dimension, where the bunch definition is not required. The focusing in the other two dimensions, lateral magnetic focusing and longitudinal bunch focusing, becomes symmetrical, if the distance traveled by electrons per cycle equals the large transverse beam dimension. This well organized bunch formation becomes possible only with chromatic correction of the magnetic focusing by the use of curved gaps. The drift tube arrangement and the cavities for a three cavity klystron are shown. (Author)
