Abstract : This report summarizes briefly a new application of Raman spectroscopy, involving the investigation of interactions between molecules. Experimental studies of the author indicate that broadening of the pure rotational lines of gases is also affected by the rotational quantum number, in addition to the gas pressure. The broadening of the lines, and also the values of the collision parameters calculated from the line broadening, are related to various multipole interactions (quadrupole-quadrupole and dispersion) between molecules. There is a satisfactory degree of agreement between the theoretically calculated and experimentally determined collision parameter values. The effect observed as a consequence of the interaction may be interpreted in terms of the transitions from one rotational state to another. As indicated by experimental investigation of the Q-branches corresponding to pure vibrational transitions, the Q-branches possess an asymmetrical contour, and their width is independent of gas pressure. The asymmetrical contour and width are interpreted in terms of the interaction between rotation and vibration. The widening of the rotational components of the Q-branches is negligible, indicating that the rotational energy levels are not only slightly perturbed.
