Abstract : Czechoslovakia undertook comparison tests in preparation for the 1965 Vienna session of the CCIR Study Group, which was to adopt a uniform system of color television for Europe. An outline is presented of the Czechoslovak method for the subjective assessment of picture quality; the method is derived from the recommended foreign methods, and the results are comparable. A group of 39 observers viewed 10 test pictures and used a system of plus or minus 3 grades for classification. The quality of the color picture in the SECAM system, with closed-circuit TV, was graded better than the NTSC by an average of 0.12. The compatible black-and-white picture in the SECAM system was graded 1.14 points lower than in the NTSC system.
