Abstract : Conventional underwater optical viewing systems are limited by the scattering and absorption properties of the underwater medium. Backscatter, in particular, poses an immediate limitation to the maximum range of underwater visibility. Three underwater viewing systems designed to reduce the image-degradation effects of backscattered light have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The results of this investigation are presented and discussed. Recommendations are presented with regard to the viewing systems, to which further development effort should be applied. (Author)
