Abstract : A description is given of a pilot computer-based inventory system which is under development to control all chemical compounds of interest to the research staff of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, particularly those compounds being tested in the drug development program. Test compounds are received in a Pilot Inventory Laboratory from which they are shipped to a number of test centers. The system generates shipping instructions, maintains inventory data on the compounds in the laboratory, and stores and processes chemical structural information and biological test data on all compounds. Chemical structural information is entered into the system by means of the Army Chemical Typewriter, a special purpose tape-typewriter. Cost analyses are presented for the operation of the Pilot Inventory Laboratory and for the processing of chemical structural information. Some implications of the costs are discussed. (Author)
