Abstract : The analysis of stresses and strains in bodies of linear, anisotropic materials by the finite element method is described. Two computer programs suitable for application to the stress analysis of solid rockets were developed--one for axisymmetric bodies and one for plane bodies. Loads due to acceleration, pressure, cure shrinkage, and thermal effects were considered. The programs are organized similar to other finite element programs developed at the Redstone Research Laboratories of Rohm and Haas Company. The peculiar behavior of anisotropic bodies under load is illustrated. It is shown that intuition gained through experience with isotropic materials may often be useless in predicting even the character of the behavior of an anisotropic body. (Author)
