Abstract : The four-terminal, manganin in C-7 epoxy gage is a piezoresistive transducer used to measure shock stress as a function of time at the interface of a test sample and gage. Knowledge of 'cross-curve' states of the sample is required to relate transducer stress to actual stresses in the sample. Interface stress measurement accuracies, which vary between plus or minus 3 percent and plus or minus 6 percent, depend on the range of stress to which the gage is subjected. Fabrication of a four-terminal gage with a nominal resistance of either 1 ohm or 10 ohms is relatively straightforward. The useful stress range covered by the 1-ohm gage is from about 10 kbar to 300 kbar. The 10-ohm gage can be used for subkilobar recording. A more accurate knowledge of the stress-resistance response of manganin and of the Hugoniot of C-7 epoxy would enhance the usefulness of the four-terminal gage as a quantitative tool. (Author)
