Abstract : This report is divided into four sections, the first of which defines shock response spectra and derives the applicable equations in terms of single-degree-of-freedom systems. Digital computer programs are described for use in the compilation of shock spectra. Programs are presented which calculate the responses of both undamped and damped systems to theoretical shock pulses. A number of spectra are presented for a variety of theoretical pulses. A number of spectra are presented for a variety of theoretical pulses. The second section discusses the errors resulting from the use of a simplified approximate equation for the calculation of shock response of damped systems. The exact and approximate acceleration-time responses are presented for several cases of half-sine and step pulses. The third section describes the extension of the digital computer programs to accept recorded complex experimental pulses. A shock transient was recorded in a projectile fuze during a test firing of a 5 in. naval gun. A shock spectrum was compiled utilizing the digital computer program. The fourth section contains the conclusions drawn from the preceding three sections. (Author)
