Abstract : Studies are performed on the characteristics of a synchronized time automated reporting system for Army tactical operations. The Army avionics requirements applicable to this system are specified. Modulation techniques suitable for application to such a link, including multipath considerations, are investigated, and pseudorandom modulation is selected for transmission and detection of synchronization pulses and to derive range and other pertinent parameters. Ranging, Doppler range, rate, altitude, synchronization, initial frequency reset, and oscillator and clock errors are derived or estimated. Various sync/resync techniques and master/slave relationships are studied, and a master sync in a configuration that includes submasters and airborne integral relays is selected. Preliminary analysis of other avionic functions that would use common time/frequency equipment is also performed. (Author)
