Abstract : In an effort to overcome operational shortcomings of existing variable data film titlers, six basically different techniques for adding alphanumeric titles to processed aerial reconnaissance film have been examined. The processes studied were: (1) xerography and electrography, (2) pigment transfer (inks and ribbon), (3) laser film marking, (4) electro-mechanical embossing, (5) photochemical add-on techniques, and (6) electrostatically deflected ink-jet printers. From the study of the first five, pigment transfer and the laser film marking techniques were selected for more intensive investigation and breadboarding. Two methods of laser marking proved unworkable, resulting in metallic vaporization and emulsion scorching. Of the pigment transfer techniques, no ribbons were found fully suitable, but encapsulated inks offered promise. The greatest success was achieved with liquid inks using a flying drum printer, but it was found that the drum motion limited the opacity of the titles. Recommendations are presented for the development of ink printers for titling original negatives and for titling with a duplicating printer. (Author)
