Abstract : Stress wave propagation in thermorheologically simple viscoelastic materials was studied through use of the extended Ritz method. A variational principle that characterizes these initial-boundary value problems was derived which yields, as its Euler equations, the equations of motion and of transient heat conduction. A type of thermomechanical coupling is included in the formulation. A direct method of the variational calculus, called the extended Ritz method, is then applied to a class of essentially one-dimensional problems for isotropic materials in plane, cylindrical, and spherical geometries. The resulting computer program was used to solve, approximately, several examples. These solutions are compared, for accuracy, with solutions obtained through numerical inversion of relevant Laplace transforms. A program listing, including instructions on usage, is appended.
