Abstract : The purposes of the report are: (1) to examine the effects resulting from a hypothetical nuclear attack on the facilities and operating capability of the gas system supplying Albuquerque, New Mex. and (2) to describe normal operation of the system and provide a functional inventory of buildings, transportation, communication and other support equipment. The postattack capability of the transmission system to deliver gas to the Albuquerque area is unimpaired. Operating convenience is temporarily hampered by the loss of a few supporting facilities such as office equipment and the microwave telephone system. Postattack distribution in the metropolitan Albuquerque area is reduced to about 29,000 meters as compared to a preattack total of 77,400. The reduction results from the necessity to valve off and shutdown 52 square miles of former operating area. The purpose is to eliminate the hazard and loss of gas from damaged services, meter sets and houselines on customers' premises. Sandia and Kirtland Air Bases are in the shutdown area. Downtown Albuquerque gas service is uninterrupted. Except for a limited number of damaged aboveground district regulators in the shutdown area, the distribution system therein is essentially unharmed, particularly where adjacent to the operating area. As a result, progressive expansion of gas service back into the shutdown area can be made as needed with very nominal amounts of repair to the distribution system. Operating employee fatalities and injuries total 8.7 and 25.8 percent, respectively. Uninjured supervisors and other personnel are adequate in number and occupational skills to operate the system in its reduced size. (Author)
