Abstract : The probability of radar signal detection with an improved signal-to-noise ratio can be enhanced by converting the analog output of the video detector into digital form and subsequently handling the signal by digital methods. This report presents the results of a study in which five methods of processing radar video returns were investigated. The methods studied included mathematical analysis of autocorrelation, mathematical analysis of crosscorrelation, pulse-to-pulse averaging, exponential weighting of sampled video returns, and reset integration. Of the five, it was found that binary weighting, a special form of exponential weighting, can be mechanized by simple, economical circuitry, that reset integration is the simplest method of all to mechanize, and that a combination of the two offers certain advantages. For example, the digital processor currently under construction provides both exponential (binary) weighting and reset integration. (Author)
