Abstract : Investigations into processing, manufacture, and testing of the MgO matrix have been made. Single crystal whiskers, fibers, and metallic wires have been incorporated into a magnesium oxide ceramic. The diametral strength of the composites is half the pure Magnesium oxide strength. The fracture mode is changed from intergranular with pure Magnesium oxide to a mixture of transgranular and intergranular on addition of fibers. Increasing the fiber content appears to increase the proportion of transgranular fracture.
