Abstract : An attempt was made to detect afterglow in aqueous solutions of proteins and synthetic polymers. It was found that irradiation of solutions with doses of 1-10 krad at room temperature produces a feeble glow which continues for hundreds of seconds after the irradiation. The experiments were performed in an open-circulation setup. The solution was irradiated with x-rays in a thermostat-controlled (t = 25C) vessel and then rapidly pumped to a thermostat-controlled cuvette located in the neighborhood of the photocathode of photomultiplier. The photocurrent was amplified and the kinetic curves of afterglow were recorded on an electronic potentiometer. (Author)
