Abstract : The objective of this study was to establish the feasibility of modulating an Eidophor control layer in a random scan as distinguished from the conventional raster scan mode of operation for the purpose of generating a display containing characters, symbols, and vectors. Since a liquid control layer responds to almost all spatial frequencies inherently generated by a random scan signal, the course of action had to be focused upon finding ways and means of preventing the control layer from responding to any spatial frequencies lower than 1/500th picture width. In order to achieve this goal, the environment of every signal deformation on the control layer surface was exposed to damping, or so-called erasing-charge field, thus preventing the desired signal deformation either from spreading out in an uncontrolled manner or from causing the surrounding control layer surface to be deformed by spatial frequencies of low order magnitude.
