Abstract : The method of obtaining a hydrostatic triaxial stress field by means of the poker chip test is reviewed in detail with extensions of the analytical coverage to include the effects of pressure applied at the periphery and bending superimposed upon the fundamental symmetric problem. The strain and strain energy density fields for the symmetric poker chip are also included in the analysis. Poker chip experiments are conducted using a silicone resin to determine its usefulness as a medium for hydrostatic fracture analysis. A limited number of tests have been run successfully and failure observed, but inherent properties of the silicone make it less than ideal for such investigations. (Author)
