Abstract : An analysis of the compressible viscous layer in the stagnation region of a sphere is presented for hypersonic flight in a rarefied atmosphere. The study is made using a continuum flow model governed by a reduced form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The assumption of an infinitesimally thin shock is not used; therefore, the boundary conditions at the shock interface are modified to take into account the viscous shear and heat conduction within the shock structure. Results are shown for several cases and compared with those obtained assuming an infinitesimal shock thickness. During this study, it was discovered that previous works in this related area were handicapped by the fact that unique solutions to the problem were not obtained. The present report develops the correct condition for providing a unique solution to the viscous layer problem in the stagnation region of a blunt body. (Author)
