Abstract : An experiment using the focusing properties of a nonuniform axially symmetric magnetic field to study large angle scattering of ions from atoms and molecules is described. The computer program which solves the trajectory equation is given along with a detailed description of the apparatus. Measurements of the absolute differential scattering cross sections for Li(+) on He from 36 deg. to 41.7 deg. at 200 eV and 300 eV and for He(+) on He from 40 deg. to 54 deg. at 300 eV and 400 eV demonstrate the feasibility of the technique. Using the measured cross sections for Li(+) on He and the computational method of Firsov, a calculation was made of the interatomic potential function for nuclear separations of 0.15A to 1.1A.
