Abstract : A new laser Q-switch (named the 'Erick Q-Switch') has been developed as an engineering model that operates on the principle of optical interference. When it is substituted as one end mirror of a laser cavity, it functions as a variable reflector to Q-switch the laser on command of an electrical pulse. Tests on ruby and neodymium cavities, two of the many rare earth and noble gas lasers within its scope of operation, when pumped with 500 joules have produced better than 10 megawatts peak power in a single light pulse demonstrating efficiency an order of magnitude higher than that achieved with a polarized light Q-switch. The engineering model is 2-1/2 inches in diameter by 3 inches long and weighs 6 ounces with no attempt to conserve size or weight. Theoretical and engineering aspects are discussed. (Author)
