Abstract : The shock pressure required to initiate steady-state, high-order, detonation in plastisol-nitrocellulose propellant RH-P-112cb has been found to be approximately 20 kbar under some of the experimental conditions employed. A model is proposed which qualitatively relates the experimental conditions of shock pressure, shock impulse, and acceptor diameter in regard to the initiation of detonation. Card gap experiments and the model show that the initiation pressure, as determined in the standard card gap test, is not a property of the acceptor material alone but is dependent as well upon the geometry of the card gap test employed.
