Abstract : The use of ion exchange membrane fuel cell as developed for Army applications in a manpack hybrid 30-watt system is quantitatively investigated. The advantages of a unique solid fuel and Kipp generator type fuel system are shown in fuel economy and portability. The versatile electronic power-conditioning system automatically switches from 14 to 28 volts depending on the battery needs during recharge or the using equipment demands. The operation of automatic gas purging to protect the system against voltage drop due to inert buildup is explained. The modular concept is analyzed and evaluated from the standpoint of operator simplicity and system simplicity for increased reliability. (Author)
