Abstract : Homologous series of pure epoxy compounds representative of bisphenols, glycidyl esters, acyclics, cycloaliphatics, glycidyl amines plus several miscellaneous types were synthesized. Room temperature mechanical properties were measured on the m-phenylenediamine crosslinked resins derived from these compounds. Systems exhibiting the best properties were further evaluated in glass and graphite reinforced composites. Of the new experimental compounds tested two glycidyl esters, diglycidyl isophthalate and diglycidyl-3,4-expoxycyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate, were found to have the best balance of properties. Glycidyl amines were characterized by high compressive strengths. Divinylcyclopentane diepoxide, 1,2,7,8-diepoxyoctane and 1,2,6,7-diepoxyheptane yielded cured products with unexpectedly high heat distortion temperatures plus good mechanical properties and water resistance.
