Abstract : Three types of optical lattice waves f are found to exist in an ionic crystal of finite dimensions and of arbitrary composition and shape: the bulk modes for which either curl f or div f is zero, and the surface modes for which both curl f and div f vanish. Solutions which are properly orthogonal are found for the general case. Explicit solutions and frequencies are given for sample shapes with one, two and three dimensions finite. The frequencies of the surface modes lie between the transverse and longitudinal bulk mode frequencies. The modifications which arise from complex unit cells and polarizable ions are also given. The problem is treated in this work without retardation effects. (Author)
