Abstract : The bottom materials in this transitional region between the Pacific and Indian Oceans consists of shelf sediments, pelagic sediments, and submarine outcrops. The sediment pattern is complicated by the irregular land and sea floor topography of the region. Five fundamental bottom types are distinguished, based on the average diameter of the particles making up the sediment. Sediment origin is classified as petrogenic, chemogenic, or biogenic, and further divided into such categories as red clay, globigerina ooze, etc. Special properties of the sediments have been studied to establish rates of accumulation, shear strengths, etc. (Author)
