Abstract : Hafnium has important applications as a nuclear control rod material, as a base material for oxidation-resistant alloys (with columbium or tantalum), and as a minor constituent in tantalum-, columbium-, tungsten- and nickel-base alloys. The metal is obtained in amounts of 1-6% as a by-product of zirconium purification. Other applications, and the prospects for replacing hafnium with other metals, are mentioned in the report.
