Abstract : The directions and magnitudes of the errors introduced in the various approximate methods of solving the nonlinear pressure differential equation for gas-lubricated journal bearings (Harrison piecewise linearization of lubricant-thickness variation; Katto-Soda and Ausman methods of linearizing the equation by series expansion using velocity, reciprocal velocity and eccentricity as small parameters, and others) are examined.
