Abstract : Four identical operational hardened UHF communications antennas were subjected to various levels of blast loading from a simulated nuclear explosion in order to verify the initial design procedures and assumptions and to form a basis for establishing criteria for future designs. Input impedance measurements were taken on all four antennas to compare pre and post-blast operation. The antennas were instrumented to determine strains and accelerations at critical points. All four antennas survived the blast without apparent operational impairment. Correlation of the test results provided valuable information pertinent to the design of future antenna structures. Further testing on antenna structures of differing configurations and uses is recommended. (Author)
