Abstract : A number of techniques potentially applicable to the quantitative measurement of gaseous hydrogen chloride were surveyed. Selection of the device described herein, a small glass tube filled with AgNO3-coated particles, was based on its unique specificity, simplicity, and sensitivity. Laboratory evaluation of this device under varied simulated atmospheric conditions including humidity and chemical interference (e.g., NO2, NaCl particles) indicates that it may be useful for field measurement of air-borne HCl resulting from the combustion of large quantities of solid propellant.
