Abstract : Mitochondria have been purified from the epidermis of the Adult White Rat. These particles were capable of respiration, exhibited Succinic and Malic dehydrogenase and Cytochrome C oxidase activity, but showed no net uptake of inorganic phosphate. The latter could be accounted for by high ATPase activity. Small amounts of ATP were formed, and this activity was suppressed by Fluoride but not by Cyanide, indicating a glycolytic origin. Electron micrographs of the preparations showed contamination by heterogenous particles. (Author)
