Abstract : A study of normal force on low aspect ratio, rectangular fin-body combinations at supersonic speeds and high angles of attack is presented. Seven cruciform rectangular fins, ranging in aspect ratio from 0.357 to 1.167, were tested. The angle of attack was varied from about -4.0 degrees to about 16.0 degrees in 1.0 degree increments. The configurations were tested at Mach numbers of 1.75, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5. It is shown that normal force obtained from linearized small perturbation theory compares well with experimental data at angles of attack between plus or minus 2.0 degrees. The experimental data show that nonlinear effects in the normal force at high angles of attack of the configurations tested are due primarily to the body, and hence a linear extension of the initial slope of the normal force versus angle of attack curves may be used to represent the normal force of the fins plus the force attributed to fin-body interference at high angles of attack. It is suggested that this fact may be used in the preliminary design of missile systems which attain high angles of attack. (Author)
