Abstract : Fouling test panels and current meters were exposed by NAVOCEANO in the Patuxent River, Maryland, from September to November 1967 to determine the effects of fouling on the functioning and drag of marine equipment. Later, strips of the test panels and a fouled current meter were subjected to various controlled water speeds in a flow tank. The panel strips had greater drag in the water than clean strips, and the degree of deflection was directly dependent on the height of the fouling community. Laboratory flow tank experiments with a control and a fouled current meter showed that the greatest variance between the meters occurred when current speeds were 2.0 to 3.5 knots. (Author)
