Abstract : A simple, inexpensive gas-generator float, employing a water-soluble salt washer (made of boric acid and sodium chloride) as a timer and release mechanism, has been developed for attachment to sea lions during preliminary training in the open ocean. This development makes possible the recovery of potential escapers by preventing them from diving, and thus should speed the training time of animals that are to be worked free in open water.
