Abstract : Experimental mass spectrometric studies of high temperature vaporization and oxidation of graphite are described. Polymeric carbon species up to C10 have been observed in free evaporation from a graphite surface. Atomic oxygen, as well as CO and Co2 has been detected desorbing from hot graphite under attack by molecular oxygen. Significant enhancement in oxidation rate has been observed using partially dissociated oxygen. Initial results of graphite vaporization by impulse heating are described. (Author)
