Abstract : The work in atomic physics of this laboratory derives from its previous status as the Institute for Mass Separation. Thus there is emphasis on ion sources and mass spectrographs. Energetic neutral atomic beams are produced by sputtering on solids and employed in a variety of experiments. With such a beam incident on a solid surface the recoil and 'sticking' phenomena are studied in considerable detail. Refined experiments on the dissociation scattering of H2(+) on atoms have also been done recently. In other experiments the excitation of He by electrons and protons has been studied in detail. The anomalies of triplet excitation and of agreement with Born prediction seem to be resolved. (Author)
