Abstract : The objective of the close-in displacement study in the Bravo event of Project Pre-GONDOLA was to obtain ground motion measurements in a saturated shale for comparison with existing nuclear and HE data and theoretical calculations. Velocity gages and slope indicator/scratch gage systems were installed at three ranges from surface ground zero. A recorder malfunction at test time prevented any velocity data from being obtained. Installation problems and the severe environment resulted in a sharply reduced data retrieval from the slope indicator/scratch gage systems. The data which were obtained, in addition to the data from a parallel experiment conducted by the Waterways Experiment Station, tended to show that the prediction techniques provide unconservative values in a saturated shale.
