Abstract : The paper is a report on a study of the use of numerical methods for solving the one-dimensional oscillator problem in quantum mechanics. The results of the study showed that under certain conditions numerical methods have a significant advantage over perturbation theory in the accurate determination of eigensolutions. Numerical solutions obtained with the initial value method consistently had relative errors on the order of .0001% or less. In contrast, the relative errors in values computed with second-order perturbation theory ranged as high as 14% for some of the cases considered. (Author)
